Openfire 4.03 is dropping users

0
0

hey folks,

I was updating my openfire server, which is running under Ubuntu, from a stable 4.01 to version 4.03. With kind help of wroot I was able to update my JAVA from 1.7 to 1.8. I did this, since I experienced my Openfire server was kicking out connected users. Unfortunately I still suffer from that "lets kick some users" problem. In the morning the participating users can login one by one. I got about 10 rosters online and some are filled with around 60 users. Within the next 2 hours, Openfire is starting dropping the users. I will attach what kind of log it gives me. Most of the users are running Spark Version 2.7.3 or 2.7.4. Is it possible, that this version of Spark is too outdated (old) to work in a proper way with OF 4.03?? Please tell me, if you need more logs! I would be grateful, I some one overhere can help me....

Openfire Required Ports Automatically Open?

0
0

Hi there,

I installed the most recent version of Openfire on my CentOS system.
It's all working perfectly, but I am curious if the installation automatically opened the required ports used by Openfire?
I think I might have opened them manually in the past, but I can't quite remember. Only reason I am wanting to know is I need to create an "instructions list" on how I installed Openfire on my system.

Thanks a lot.

OpenFire Single Server Load Testing 120,000 Concurrent Connections

0

Update 12/18/2015 (This original test was for 80,000 users online concurrently. Update is now 120,000 but with no rosters.)

Openfire 3.10.3

(These servers are 6 years old)

OpenFire Server specs: Windows 2012 R2 Server. 64 bit java.
Running OpenFire as a background service. Dual CPUs (Intel Xeon L5420 2.50GHZ. 24GB RAM)

SQL Database Server: Windows 2008 R2 with SQLExpress 2012 (free version of SQL). 8GB RAM Single Xeon E5420 CPU 2.50GHZ

Both servers are using Samsung 850 120GB SSD hard drives. The SQL server has an additional 120GB SSD (D Drive) for the openfire SQL database.

Both servers are not using RAID currently just single drives.

OpenFire Server:

NIC#1 WAN IP Address (3 Linux CentOS Tsung test servers connecting to this IP for the load testing)

NIC#2 LAN  IP Address (Used to connect to a Windows 2008 R2 SQLExpress database for OpenFire via LAN in the same room)

SQL server showed almost no cpu usage the entire time. It appeared to be idle for the most part. It handled all requests easily.

Test #1

5-15 roster "friends" for 40k random users. No rosters for other 40k random users.

15 logging in per second with initial presence and roster updates.

72,000 online = 32% cpu

I logged in with spark on my own PC quickly, no delay and roster was updated right away.

1.png

Test #2

5-15 roster "friends" for 40k random users. No rosters for other 40k random users.

22.5 users logging in per second with initial presence and roster updates.

10k online 5% cpu

20k online 10% cpu (2gb ram used for java in openfire)

30k online 15% cpu (2gb ram used for java in openfire)

40k online 18% cpu  (2gb ram used for java in openfire)

79k online 50% cpu (2gb ram used for java in openfire)

80k online 4% cpu after no more users logging in and no more roster/presence updates

I logged in with spark on my own PC quickly, no delay and roster was updated right away.

2.png

Same as above, just higher cpu usage

5-15 rosters for 40k users. No rosters for other 40k

30 logging in per second with initial presence and roster
updates

Tested once and was using just over 2GB RAM used for java in
openfire. 2nd test used 4GB RAM used for java in openfire

79k online 70% cpu (2gb ram used for java in openfire.

80k online 4% cpu after no more users logging in and no more roster/presence updates

4GB on a second time running this test. OpenFire cache was using this extra RAM so I believe the previous tests caused this memory to be used and not released.

After I stopped the OpenFire service and restarted it, the cache cleared and it ran again with 2GB being used

I logged in with spark on my own PC quickly, no delay and roster was updated right away.

CONCLUSION:

If you can manage how many client connections per second are connecting to your server, even some old hardware like I have will do just fine. I should easily be able to do over 150k or 200k assuming I can manage the speed in which users are trying to reconnect which in my case I can because I have a custom jabber client program that all of my users will be using. I wrote a program similar to TeamViewer and Logmein and I use OpenFire to handle the accounts and use the awesome REST API via my webserver where users can sign up and pay for my remote control pc software and choose a plan such as 5 PC license, 10 PC license etc. When they create their account the php script uses REST to send the proper command to the OpenFire server which creates and manages the users and their rosters. I also allow people to share their PCs with other users via the website which again uses REST to modify the rosters of those accounts.

I wanted to see if OpenFire had what it takes to do what I needed without having to purchase a bunch of servers frequently as the user base grew.

I have 4 of these servers and setup the cluster which was also working but I only had 3 additional servers which had Linux CentOS and Tsung installed for the load testing. Each of those servers seemed to cap out at around 27,000 test users concurrently which is why I could only get around 80k in this test. The testing above was not on the cluster, it was only on a single server.

So if you had 4 of these servers ($150 on ebay) and an additional server for load balancing such as one with Linux and HA Proxy, you could send a lot more requests per second.

The other thing to note is that I did a test with 150 users per second logging on and I think by 25k or so online the cpu usage was getting very high and hit 100% soon after if I recall. This was on the same exact server mentioned above.

It is these connections per second that really put pressure on the server and I'm sure if they had even larger rosters, that would compound the issue and add more stress. If you could find a cheap 16 core or 24 core server that is also several years old, I think it would be able to handle 150-200 connections per second with the test I did above. If I had one of these servers I would test it but I do not.

Issue with OpenFire 4.0.3 setup

I am having an issue with a new OpenFire that we are creating.  The server that we are installing OpenFire 4.0.3 is a Windows 2012 server VM within VMware 5.5.  We are doing a LDAP/Active Directory set up with our environment.  We have been able to go through most of the OpenFire configuration but we run into a hang up after the 'Users Settings' connection back to our AD environment.  We are able to "test settings" because it sees our users within AD.  Below is what we see before getting to the next last step.

Problems with LDAP authentication with two domains, and matching username

0
0

I have two domains `examples` and `samples`, any user that is only in one domain can login to OpenFire just fine. If a username is in both domains `examples\jdoe` and `samples\jdoe` neither can login.

Normally, they just login using `jdoe` but that doesnt' work, nor does `examples\jdoe` or `samples\jdoe`

How can I fix this?

Dear all,

I am currently writing a document for my company which want to chose a chat server solution.

Where could I find an up-to-date features list?

I can't find proper documentation (non-technical)...

THanks for your help

Pidgin don't update users list from the server

Hello all,

I have a openfire 4.0.3 on a centOS server with LDAP integration. everything works just fine.

I'm using Pidgin for the chat client.

When I'm adding a user to a group, the client update the connect list accordingly.

But, When I'm removing a user from a group, the connect list remain the same. with the "old" user.

In Spark client everything works fine. so I assume that the problem is not in the server.

Does anyone hes this issue before? or may think of a sloution to this problem?

* I have a demand from the company to use only Pidgin. so changing the client to Spark won't solve it

Thanks

Openfire (on AWS VM private, extranet) behind ELB (public, extranet)

0
0

Has anyone been able to deploy successfully openfire on AWS?

I had the following plan:

EC2 (with Win 2012 R2) VM in the extranet in private subnet which will host Openfire. Openfire will use ports 80 and 443 to communicate with XMPP clients (instead of the 5222 and 5223) - this makes the machine unreachable from internet, but only the ELB passes the internet traffic (80 and 443), that's why it is placed in Extranet Private subnet.

ELB in extranet with public ip address. ELB and Openfire VM talk over 80 and 443, i.e. firewall allows the traffic, and the VM is in the security groups of the ELB. The XMPP chat clients will talk to the ELB which will pas the traffic to Openfire VM

I use psi-chat on a VM and try to connect to the OPenfire via the ELB public IP but I get authentication error "Not authorized". PSI-chat client and the Openfire are configured to use port 80, and plaintext!!!

Any ideas?

pubsub events in offline messages

Hi there,

I've already had an offline message table in mysql with more than 8GB. I've cleared the table and kept an eye on it.

After a week, my offline messages are already 150MB big.

I've looked into the mysql table and the messages there are all pubsub events like this:

<message to="xxx@etecture.de" from="yyy@etecture.de" id="yyy@etecture.de__xxx@etecture.de__aRnPd"><event xmlns="http://jabber.org/protocol/pubsub#event"><items node="http://jabber.org/protocol/tune"><item id="3ff4b198-4260-480a-93df-0fed339d0e1b151" node="http://jabber.org/protocol/tune"><tune xmlns="http://jabber.org/protocol/tune"/></item></items></event></message>

can someone please explain to me, what these messages are and why are they staying there?

it degrades performance and wastes space, so i would be glad to get rid of them.

any hint is appreciated!

greetings

Christian

P.S.: its a openfire 3.9.2 on debian linux with mysql 5.5 right now. had the same problem with 3.8.x, too.

Connection manager branch 3.7

0

Hi everyone,

The following pagehas packages for version 3.6.3.

This version is quite old, and does not include major compatibility fixes, like this one. In my opinion, people running the 3.6.3 version will quickly encounter issues that are not present in the 3.7 branch. The 3.7 branch is, I think, stable enough to be released (last patch in 2010), unless of course if there are majors bugs I'm not aware of.

I think it would be for the best to build and package the 3.7 branch, and to advertise that version as the latest stable (instead of 3.6.3).

Or maybe to skip 3.7 and go to 3.8 directly, branched from master (it seems other useful improvement have been made too).

Or to change the page to remove packaged versions, and ask users to build latest version from master. But I think most people are reluctant to tie productions servers to a master's latest commit. So the sensible way for users right now is to build versions from specific hand picked commits, or from forks. And this is not very user friendly.

Thanks in advance.

[bug] ldap.authorizeField property is ignored in LdapAuthorizationPolicy

Hi all

I wish to report (what I think it is) a bug.

in LdapAuthorizationPolicy, the "ldap.authorizeField" is ignored. In fact it is got from LDAP but not used to gather the logins that may authorized a selected username.

I attach a patch to fix the problem.

Thanks

Antonio

P.S.: This is the second time I see a JIRA that's not open to public reports (the other time was with ANTLR, and they were not very friendly). This is pretty annoying. At Apache, JBoss and others reports are open for everyone.

How can clients differentiate newly created shared groups from regular groups?

0
0

Hi,

My client has different options for contacts in a shared group vs contacts in a group the user created. A big difference is that the user can't edit shared groups so those options aren't displayed on the UI. The client currently knows which groups are shared groups by doing a shared group info query request (via the smack SharedGroupManager).  I am using openfire 3.10.2 and it seems that the list of shared groups returned from openfire doesn't get updated with the newly created shared group until after the user logs out and logs back in.

Is this a bug with openfire or am I using an incorrect method of identifying shared groups?

Thanks in advance,

-Brian

Current 3.9.3 OpenFire Server Issues

I also upgraded from 3.9.1 to 3.9.3 and ran into the similar problems people have been having. I have had none of the reported problems with LDAP, groups and memory leaks as other users reported until going to 3.9.3. I have my OpenFire server connected to my Active Directory using LDAP connection in the server console. My OpenFire server is running on Cent OS 6.5 with the most recent general release kernel - 2.6.32-431.17.1.el6.x86_64 #1 SMP.

OF Groups Missing in IM Client: I created object groups in AD specifically for the OpenFire server and linked my various staff and departments into those groups. Before 3.9.3 I had no problem with groups being pulled in from AD and disappearing in the IM client. Renaming the groups with removing spaces and special characters has so far worked but is a terrible solution to this problem.

Users Appearing Offline: I also experienced the issue with users appearing offline even though they weren't though their session was still active on the server. Expanding the vcard, username2roster and even the java memory size and caches all seemed to help but I still think there is an underlining problem.

Java Memory Leak: Also as I stated before I'm experiencing the memory leak now. I'm running the current java Cent OS 6.5 general release version 1.7.0_55, OpenJDK Runtime Environment (rhel-2.4.7.1.el6_5-x86_64 u55-b13), OpenJDK 64-Bit Server VM (build 24.51-b03, mixed mode). I changed my sysconfig file to point to the /etc/alternative/java link instead of using the OpenFire built in, However I'm still getting a constant memory growth in my OF admin console where the memory keeps growing from roughly 40 MB to 120-130 MB out of 592 MB total. Granted I'm not maxing out my java memory buffer but it's not normal behavior.

Granted this is a post that applies to several existing posts but I felt it might be better to group them up into one.

How to use search thru Search Plugin?

0
0

I'm in trouble with Search Plugin:

- Pidgin is able to do search but I see no additional info about users except their JIDs

- Spark can't do search at all (result list is empty) I'm using latest 2.8.1 on Windows 7

How to get more info in search output? I'm interested at least in fields mentioned in ldap.SearchFields.

Group Chat History

0
0

Using openfire 3.3.2 running on  linux box; I used to have a 25 line group-chat history which I didnt want.

Using the Openfire Admin Console, I set the "group chat history settings" to "Don't show history".   This has meant that nothing new is logged.

However, Whenever I enter a conference room in Spark I see the last 25 lines that were logged before changing that setting.

Personally, I would think that asking for no history should prevent this from happening.  Is there any way I can clear the history so that it doesnt appear?

Thanks
